Recognizing the need for the community to take a proactive role in attracting business to our community, the local Chamber of Commerce established an Economic Development Committee in 1996 to study Saint Jo's needs for economic growth, assist in meeting such needs, and make recommendations to the city regarding serving these needs. The Economic Development Committee received the assistance of Texas New Mexico Power, who made available Chris Keck, their Community Relations Coordinator, and E.J. (Chip) Bauer II, a consultant in business development. The Economic Development Committee of the Chamber of Commerce made a recommendation to the Saint Jo City Council (the governing authority for the city) that propositions for the establishment of 4A and 4B Economic Development Corporations be placed on the August, 1997 ballot. Both propositions passed by a 2 to 1 margin, and such corporations have since been established. The expansion and diversification of business in the city and community are the top priorities of the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Saint Jo. |
